Peacock Tarantula Conservation in the Eastern Ghats.

The Peacock Tarantula Conservation Project focuses on the conservation and ecological assessment of the endemic and threatened Peacock (Gooty) Tarantula (Poecilotheria metallica) within the landscape of the Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve (NSTR). Implemented by the Eastern Ghats Wildlife Society in collaboration with the Forest Department, the project aims to generate baseline scientific data on the species’ distribution, habitat use, population status, and threats across selected forest divisions of the Eastern Ghats.

As one of the world’s most iconic arboreal tarantulas and a species protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, the Peacock Tarantula faces increasing threats from habitat degradation, forest disturbances, and illegal collection for the exotic pet trade. Despite its conservation significance, ecological information on the species remains limited.

The project involves systematic field surveys, habitat assessment, geospatial mapping, and community interactions to identify critical habitats and conservation priority areas. Special emphasis is placed on understanding microhabitat preferences, documenting anthropogenic pressures, and strengthening local awareness regarding the ecological importance of lesser-known invertebrates.
