Smallest cat in the world!
Smallest cat in the world recently found in Visakhapatnam, India.
The Rusty Spotted Cat is the smallest cat in the world. It is endemic to Indian Subcontinent and found nowhere else. Their population is threatened by habitat loss and hybridization with domestic cats. They are protected under the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 under Schedule I.
Very little is known about the ecology and conservation status of this species as there have been only a few studies on them. Small wild cats and other small mammals are mostly neglected in India and their crucial role in the ecology is often underrated.
This specimen was rescued by wildlife authorities from a dry deciduous forest patch very close to the sprawling coastal city of Visakhapatnam. We urge everyone to support us in conserving such rare and endangered species which are a natural heritage to the nation.
